A first look at new-to-market solutions
The AIA Conference on Architecture showcases the products and materials that are building our future. From scuff-resistant paint to bird-friendly glass, these 10 products are among the newest solutions.
Scuff-resistant paint
Ultra Scuff Defense interior paint from Behr offers the best of both worlds: the rich, non-reflective look of a flat finish but with durability suitable for high-traffic areas. The paint is resistant to scuffs and mars, is burnish resistant, prevents most stains, and is antimicrobial and mold-resistant. Ultra Scuff Defense is low VOC and provides a paint and primer in one.
Automated, customizable skylight
Marvin’s Awaken skylight offers several customizable features that maximize light, ventilation, and views. It features soft, tunable LED lighting to mimic the glow of daylight after dark; rain and environmental sensors that determine the best times to automatically open and close; and a hidden perimeter screen. Awaken operates via an app, voice control, or wall switch. The skylight comes in sizes up to 48” wide and 90” tall.
Glass-faced gypsum panels
Pabco Gypsum has expanded its lineup of glass-faced products with the introduction of 5/8” Pabco Glass Interior. Featuring a mold- and water-resistant core encased in a glass fiber mat, the panels offer greater moisture resistance and improved dimensional stability compared to standard gypsum board. The 5/8” Type X proprietary gypsum core is naturally fire-resistant and also is noncombustible, dimensionally stable, and resistant to warping, sagging, and buckling. The panels are formulated to withstand extended exposure under normal weather conditions for up to one year.
Time-saving coating
A single-component, multi-substrate waterborne acrylic urethane enamel, Corotech Command from Benjamin Moore is designed to save time, simplifying maintenance and improving labor efficiency. The coating dries to the touch in 15 minutes and allows for return to service traffic in 24 hours. It is block-resistant and is flexible to resist cracking and peeling. Command is ideal for safety markers, handrails, stairs, doors, windows, shelving, and concrete floors subject to heavy pedestrian and forklift traffic.
Low-VOC sealant
Adseal LM 4600 Series low-VOC silicone sealant offers greater elasticity for use with expansion joints, and it adheres to masonry, granite, white marble, concrete, brick, glass, painted and non-painted metals, and some plastics. Ten-ounce cartridges and 20-ounce sausage formats are available in more than 300 colors and custom colors.
Stationary awnings
Made with AAMA 2604 powder-coated aluminum and strong polycarbonate panels, Feeney’s new stationary architectural awnings are designed for long-lasting durability and defense from the weather. The awnings carry a Class 4 impact rating, are engineered to withstand snow/wind loads up to 35.5 psf, and feature built-in rain gutters. The awnings come in two styles: Icon, featuring clean lines and curves, and Era, boasting a more ornate look; three panel options and five standard frame colors are available.
Bathroom privacy screens
Scranton Products has increased the size of its privacy screens for use between urinals, sinks, and hand dryers. The screens are available up to 83” high and feature rounded edges. The screens are resistant to mold, mildew, and odor; germs; corrosion; and scratches and dust. A range of colors and textures is available.
Bird-Friendly Glass
Guardian Glass North America recently debuted Guardian Bird1st Etch glass. With four bird-friendly patterns, the glass reduces the likelihood of bird collisions while providing architects with more options to achieve their design aesthetic. The products are available on the company’s UltraClear low-iron glass and standard clear glass, and can be paired with SunGuard SuperNeutral 68, SNX 62/27, and SNX 51/23 coatings.
Electric Outdoor Heaters With Integrated Light
The Bromic Eclipse Smart-Heat combines warmth and light in a contemporary wall-mounted, ceiling-mounted, or freestanding fixture. The units’ Smart-Heat technology ensures radiant heat spreads evenly across an area of up to 144 square feet. A dimmable lighting rail and sleek ceramic fascia add style and ambience to the heater’s functionality.
Accent Fins
Kingspan’s new Accent Fin adds unique aesthetic dimension to two of the company’s insulated metal panels, the KS Series and the Optimo. The extruded aluminum Accent Fins come in six shapes—blade, mini-blade, triangle, A-frame, rectangle, and flat box—each with a maximum length of 12’. The fins can be oriented horizontally or vertically and come in standard and custom colors.
